Outstanding iron Macehead from Medieval times. Gold inlays representing the 'Orans'' i.e. 'one who prays' (who was typically a female with outstretched arms petitioning the Lord to deliver the soul) reach upward from the base to heaven.
This is a very impressive piece of weaponry that looks to have been used but that may have been ceremonial as were many maces throughout ancient history.
The head has been coated with a fine layer of varnish presumably to stabilize the piece and prevent oxidation and loss of the gold inlays. It has a few dings and some general wear but it is in very good condition overall.Shipping:
